Aluminium chains revive the memory of the Cloister of Sant Francesc in Montblanc

To mark its centenary, Kriskadecor-Sans Amill has launched “100 Years of Inspiring Emotions,” a pop-up exhibition that transforms various iconic spaces in Montblanc through projects created by design and architecture schools.

“Memory Rising”, located in the Cloister of Sant Francesc, is one of the installations that form part of this urban exhibition. The project was developed by second-year students on the Higher Vocational Education programme at LCI Barcelona, under the supervision of Maria Flaqué.

A dialogue between heritage, light and spirituality

For centuries, the Cloister of Sant Francesc was a place of silence, contemplation and community life. Although time has erased much of its physical presence, its legacy remains deeply rooted in Montblanc’s collective memory.

Inspired by the vaulted forms of European religious architecture, this installation revives the essence of the site through a temporary structure made from aluminium chains. The proposal explores the relationship between the earthly and the spiritual, transforming the space into an experience where matter, light and spirituality come together.

The volumes rise from the ground towards the sky, evoking the verticality of Gothic architecture, where height symbolised the soul’s ascent and the search for the transcendent. The soft, lightweight forms of the aluminium chains suggest this transition between two realms, creating a space that invites contemplation and reflection.

The colour palette reinforces this symbolism. The luminous finishes evoke ideas of light, strength and purity, while the transparency of the chains continually changes the way the installation is perceived throughout the day.

Rather than reconstructing a lost architectural element, “Memory Rising” revives an idea: architecture’s ability to connect people with something beyond the physical world. An invitation to rediscover heritage through emotion, memory and light.
