Kriskadecor's project for sustainable, efficient and environmentally friendly Christmas decorations
In 2008, Lavola, a sustainability services company, created an innovative and energy-efficient product that not only met the requirements of good eco-design, but also stood out for its originality. In this unique project, they transformed the street lamps of Manlleu into giant champagne glasses, using gold Kriskadecor chains, adapted to the dimensions of the luminaires. The chains were attached at the top and bottom by means of two supports of different diameters, achieving a conical shape that evoked a festive aesthetic.
The main advantage of this eco-design was that the light from the lanterns themselves illuminated the chains, making them glow and giving the feeling of a traditional Christmas decoration. This solution avoided contributing to light pollution, while at the same time representing significant energy savings. A comparative life cycle analysis of this project, which considered the extraction of raw materials, manufacture and use of the decorative elements over 15 years, showed that the impact on climate change was 37% lower compared to the use of traditional Christmas lighting.
Sustainability in every detail
The use of anodized aluminum in the manufacture of the chains not only allowed for greater durability, but also facilitated the transport and installation of the product due to its light weight, thus reducing CO2 emissions. This system required virtually no maintenance, since the anodizing protected the aluminum from climatic variations, guaranteeing a long service life.
The result of the project was a resounding success with local residents, who appreciated the many advantages of this sustainable design over traditional decorations. In addition, the installation attracted media attention, highlighting the possibility of achieving a more environmentally friendly Christmas. Thanks to this innovative solution from Lavola, it was demonstrated that sustainability and aesthetics could go hand in hand, offering a greener and more efficient alternative for Christmas celebrations.
