Architectural intervention with aluminium chains for Casa Batlló

Kengo Kuma’s architectural intervention for Casa Batlló includes anodised aluminium chains by Kriskadecor at different points of the new vertical communication core of the recently inaugurated immersive tour.

The tour begins with a spectacular thirteen-ton floating staircase enhanced by a cascade of chains that starts on the roof and descends to the basement of the modernist building. The sculptural form accompanies Gaudí’s architecture, as well as bringing movement and volume to the space thanks to the different overlapping layers that, depending on the time of day, absorb the different shades of light that filter through the skylight.

When the visitor finishes the visit on the roof, the descent of the eight floors takes place through a staircase that begins in the attic. The chains are worked in layers generating a second skin that, thanks to the biophilic forms, are perfectly integrated into Gaudí’s universe.

Each floor offers a unique experience through a carefully designed colour gradient. The lightest aluminium tones appear at the start of the tour, on the rooftop, gradually deepening until they reach the black that defines the former coal bunker spaces. The result is a fully immersive journey for the visitor.

In addition, the chains rest on a plinth that integrates a strip of LED light that favours the verticality of the entire composition, providing lightness and accentuating the transparency of the chain links. The exit is through a newly created corridor that adapts to the organic shapes of the ceiling. The random banding creates a metal mesh effect that is accentuated by the lighting.

In both the atrium and the stairwells, the chains emerge from sound-absorbing panels that enhance the acoustic comfort of the space.
