Kriskadecor project inspired by early 20th-century European covered passages, with aluminium chains shaping the interior
Designed by Gashu Arquitectos, the DoubleTree by Hilton Lima San Isidro draws inspiration from the covered commercial passages found in many European cities at the beginning of the 20th century.
When the project began in 2018, the development was known as El Pasaje (The Passage) due to the connection created between the hotel and a neighbouring commercial gallery. Linking both buildings opened a shortcut between two streets and encouraged pedestrians to enter and move through the space. This concept became the starting point for the architecture and interior design, from the iron-and-glass façade to the treatment of the hotel’s public areas.
A defining element for a multifunctional space
One of the main challenges was the compact size of the public area, which needed to accommodate the reception, front desk, lobby, bar and lounge. Gashu Arquitectos therefore looked for an element capable of bringing these different functions together while giving the space a strong identity.
“The curtain had to be something important, as it wrapped around the entire public area of the hotel,” explains architect Lucas Gashu.
The bespoke Kriskadecor aluminium chain installation provides that visual presence without creating solid boundaries. Its transparency maintains a sense of connection throughout the interior, while its texture adds an unexpected tactile dimension.
“What I especially like is that when people enter the hotel, after seeing the curtain, the first thing they do is approach it and touch it,” says Gashu, recalling I. M. Pei’s idea that architecture should not only be experienced and contemplated, but also touched.
Transparency, reflections and architectural memory
Transparency and reflection are central to the project. Highly reflective glass at entrance level allows views through the building to overlap with reflections of the surroundings, visually extending the interior beyond its physical boundaries.
The aluminium chains add another layer to this composition, filtering and softening these reflections while constantly changing the perception of the space as guests move through it.
The graphic design reproduced on the chains completes the concept. Inspired by a now-demolished historic building in central Lima, Gashu Arquitectos combined fragments of its façade, particularly its windows, with more abstract geometric forms.
The result brings past and present together in an enveloping surface where graphics, transparency and reflection overlap, creating a distinctive identity for the DoubleTree by Hilton Lima San Isidro.
