Architectural design project for the façade of the Ecuadorian pavilion at the Universal Exposition of Milan 2015.

The design objective of the Ecuador Pavilion was to distinguish itself from the surrounding buildings, establishing a profound emotional connection with the traditional and distinctive elements of the Latin American country. To achieve this, the graphic designs of fabrics from the Otavalo region were adapted and modernised, seamlessly integrating their ancestral patterns into a contemporary and avant-garde context.

The façade cladding, made from Kriskadecor anodised aluminium links, spanned across four faces, with an average height of 9 metres, reaching 10.5 metres at certain points. The north and south sides were 25.4 metres wide, while the east and west sides each measured 15 metres in length.

Colours and details that evoke the diversity and culture of Ecuador.

This impressive metal structure was supported by the lightness of the material, enabling the design to be both sturdy and visually striking. Natural light, complemented by carefully planned lighting down to the smallest detail, enhanced the pavilion’s perception, creating a dynamic and ever-changing atmosphere throughout the day.

The colours used on the façade reflected Ecuador’s vibrant diversity, representing its colourful regions, population, landscape, handicrafts, ethnic groups, gastronomy, and cultural expressions. These tones not only paid homage to the country’s rich cultural heritage but were also encapsulated in its logo and slogan: “Ecuador Ama La Vida” (Ecuador Loves Life). The interplay between the light and colours of the façade created a visual effect that deeply connected the viewer with the essence of Ecuador.

The design and project management were handled by ZORROZUA Y ASOCIADOS, consultants with extensive experience across various sectors. They successfully captured Ecuador’s identity in a pavilion that, beyond its architectural function, became an emotional and cultural reflection of the country. This project stood out not only for its innovative use of materials but also for its unique and contemporary approach to communicating the essence of Ecuador.
