Aluminium chain project for a sensory journey to the "Top of Europe".

The Jungfraujoch train station, known as the “Top of Europe”, is located at an impressive altitude of 3,454 meters above sea level, making it the highest railway station in Europe. From this vantage point, visitors are just a few steps, or a short elevator ride, away from a unique alpine experience: the majestic view of the Aletsch glacier and peaks over 4,000 meters high. This spot, nestled in a rocky cavern, is much more than just an arrival point; it is the beginning of a fascinating journey into the breathtaking beauty of the Alps.

Recently, the station has been transformed with a spectacular installation that further enhances the arrival and departure of visitors. Designed by iart, it aims to make every moment, from arrival to departure, an unforgettable experience. Walking through the station’s corridors and platform, travellers are greeted by a series of multi-layered chain curtains that transform the space, adding a unique dimension, both visually and sensorially. These curtains, stretching over 30 meters, act as a common thread that guides visitors from the train exit to the observation deck, connecting the subway world with the majestic alpine landscape.

The installation incorporates a light projection that varies according to the time of day. On arrival, the light imitates the softness of dawn, guiding visitors towards the mountain. On departure, on the other hand, the lighting recreates the atmosphere of the evening, with a special focus on the turnstiles where tourists return to the train. In addition, the spotlights and the use of organically deformed glass allow the light to scatter through the space, creating a dynamic and enveloping atmosphere that varies with the changing light.

The carefully selected music accompanies the variation of light, combining sounds that evoke the landscape of mountains and ice, mixed with musical elements that refer to the familiarity of Swiss culture. The entire design seeks to invite visitors to capture the experience through photography, with a specially designed space for taking selfies, where projectors add verbal content on the installation, celebrating special events such as Christmas or Swiss National Day. In this way, each photo taken at this point becomes a unique reminder of having been in a special place, on a special day.

The Jungfraujoch train station is not just a transit point, but a gateway to a sensory experience that combines the grandeur of the alpine landscape with an artistic installation that turns arrival and departure into unforgettable moments. Undoubtedly, this space reflects the best of the “Top of Europe”, offering a warm welcome and a farewell that leaves a mark in the memory of every visitor.
