Project with 235 km of aluminium chains from Kriskadecor
The recently opened Westfield Mall of the Netherlands, located between The Hague and Leiden, is the largest shopping centre in the country. Boasting 117,000 square metres of floor space, it offers up to 280 venues for shopping, dining, drinking, relaxation and endless enjoyment.
As the existing shopping centre was composed of several blocks with distinct identities, one of the challenges for MVSA Architects — who remodelled the entire complex — was to seamlessly integrate the old with the new. It was within this context that the Dining Plaza’s ceiling design, featuring the sinuous Kriskadecor panels, was conceived. A total of 30 curved pieces in brilliant brown and satin gold come together to create a unique space that stimulates the senses of both friends and strangers alike.

In fact, the aluminium chains mimic the movement of air flowing in all directions, creating a warm and welcoming environment for visitors. According to Thijs van de Straat of MVSA Architects, “We were able to create a space where you could sit down, relax and feel comfortable and happy, because the curtains generate that kind of atmosphere.”
Another advantage is that “they allow the high and low areas of the ceiling to be unified, making the design much more cohesive.” The chain panels wrap around the various restaurant spaces, highlighting and defining them. Furthermore, by using different lighting colours, the ambience can be adapted to any season, creating a versatile and dynamic atmosphere.

Kriskadecor’s work, in figures
For the Westfield Mall of the Netherlands project, 30 panels with a total surface area of 3,020 m² were produced, amounting to 235,600 metres of chain — equivalent to 235 km, enough to span the entire width of the Netherlands.
Producing the 12,251,200 chain links required over 1,000 km of aluminium wire, approximately the distance between The Hague and Milan. Together with the 1,326 linear metres of rail (1.33 km), the total weight of the installation reaches around 9,885 kg. In terms of production time, 2,400 working hours (or 300 full working days) were needed, comprising 800 hours of fabrication and 1,050 hours of assembly.
