Kriskadecor's project at MACBA in Barcelona invites visitors to explore and be part of the artistic process itself.

Barcelona’s MACBA hosts the first retrospective dedicated to the work of Catalan artist Daniel Steegmann Mangrané under the title “A leaf instead of the eye”. This exhibition, co-produced with the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma in Helsinki, brings together a wide selection of works made from the late 1990s to the present, including drawings, paintings, sculptures, photographs, holograms, and a striking installation made with Kriskadecor aluminum chains, a material that has accompanied the artist in his international exhibitions over the years.

The exhibition is a journey through more than twenty-five years of artistic research in which Steegmann Mangrané has explored the boundaries between nature and culture, subjects and objects, visibility and invisibility. His work questions traditional dualisms and offers a holistic view of the world, in which humans and their environment are fluidly interconnected. This philosophy is reflected in the constant presence of nature, especially the rainforest, which for the artist is not only a geographical space, but a living being that represents the environmental, political and social urgencies of the present.

A sensory space of transformation

The exhibition is not only an exhibition of art objects, but also seeks a deep sensory experience. Steegmann Mangrané’s works invite the viewer to become physically involved, interacting with space, light and objects. Among the most prominent pieces, aluminum chains play a crucial role in creating an immersive atmosphere. These chains, which hang from the ceiling and form a continuous curtain, are more than just a decorative element; they are meant to be seen, touched, heard and passed through, allowing for a direct and tangible interaction with the environment.

The chains become a flexible barrier that not only delimits the space, but also invites viewer interaction. This is achieved thanks to the Shape Frame, a decorative solution that not only marks the boundaries of the installation, but also serves a practical function. This frame has the ability to reproduce a wide variety of shapes, both organic and geometric, even creating suspended openings between the chains.

This characteristic of traversing the space, both physically and perceptually, intensifies the relationship between the work and the visitor, transforming the exhibition into an experience in which viewers become active participants. Thus, a continuous play is generated between the visible and the invisible, the solid and the ethereal, which challenges the traditional boundaries between art and the public, inviting visitors to explore and be part of the artistic process itself.
