To mark its centennial, Kriskadecor-Sans Amill has launched “100 Years of Inspiring Emotions,” a pop-up exhibition that transforms various iconic spaces in Montblanc through projects created by design and architecture schools.
“Merlets de Muralla”, located in Plaça de Sant Francesc, is one of the installations that form part of this urban exhibition. Developed by students from Elisava, the project was supervised by Martí Capdevila, Luis Doornekamp and designer Luis Eslava, who also created Kriskadecor’s Gradient Collection.
Merlets de Muralla
Montblanc’s medieval walls are one of the town’s most recognizable landmarks. Their distinctive profile, defined by a rhythmic sequence of battlements and gaps, creates a silhouette that has shaped the town for centuries and become part of its collective identity.
The installation begins with a seemingly simple question: what would happen if the battlements gradually dissolved into a continuous line? Taking this idea as its starting point, a surface of aluminum chains extends almost level with the top of the walls, visually completing their profile without altering their presence.
Between the suspended line of chains and the historic stone, a semi-covered space emerges: a small temporary pavilion that sits alongside the walls without touching or modifying them. Lightweight and fully reversible, the installation establishes a respectful dialogue with the heritage setting, adding a new layer of interpretation without leaving any permanent trace.
Light passes through the chains, filtering and breaking across the surface to create soft shadows and shifting reflections that change as visitors move through the installation. The resulting space invites them to pause, observe and temporarily experience the walls from a different perspective: not as a boundary or barrier, but as a place for gathering, movement and connection between past and present.
